They say when you fall off a horse, you should get back on again. Well, sometimes when you fall off the horse, things like tibial plateau fractures happen which means that getting back on again are delayed as surgeries and recoveries take awhile. But the message is don’t let the tumble scare you away from doing something. Falls will happen; things will break. The hard part is making sure that what breaks isn’t your resolve, perseverance, or passion. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m not just talking about riding horses. Running your business requires the same mindset.
The mantra many hear is “fail fast, fail often” but the very important follow up is “Then brush the dirt off and get rolling again.” Sometimes that is a new venture. Other times, it is the same company maybe just a different strategy. Or maybe it is an awfully similar strategy but with lessons learned from the fall. It all depends on you, your company, and the type of failure that was encountered.
You don’t want to be one of the “walking dead” companies, but that doesn’t mean you stop after one fall. There is a need for grit. You have to go in unafraid of the falls and be ready to go again. While you are building your company, make sure you are building a resilient one.
But if you want to meet me in the next 12 weeks or so, let’s go where I can avoid stairs.
